Short answer: when you specify handmade mother-of-pearl furniture, the FF&E schedule should state the dimensions, base material, type and density of inlay, finish, upholstery, quantity, lead time and packing, plus a note that natural shell varies in colour and that small hand-made variations are part of the product. Asking for an approval drawing before production protects everyone.

What to clarify in the specification
Tolerances
Hand-carved solid wood has small variations. Agree a dimensional tolerance in the quotation, and specify tighter tolerances only where pieces must fit into joinery or niches.
Natural variation
Mother-of-pearl is a natural material: colour shifts between white, pink, green and blue. State in the spec that this is expected, so it is not treated as a defect during snagging.
Finish approval
Approve the finish from photos in natural light or a physical reference, as agreed in the quotation. Screens distort colour.
Upholstery
If your project requires specific fabrics, performance ratings or fire-retardant treatments, state the standard in the brief so we can confirm what can be supplied.
Commercial use
In hotels and restaurants, specify glass tops on dining and coffee tables, felt or nylon glides on chair legs, and wall fixings for mirrors. See Damascene furniture in commercial spaces.
Approval drawings
For custom pieces we provide a drawing with dimensions and the pattern layout. The approved drawing becomes the reference for production and inspection, and changes after approval reset the timeline.
Packing and site delivery
- Ask for packed dimensions and weights for logistics planning.
- Confirm door widths, lift sizes and delivery permits for towers and hotels.
- Agree whether pieces are delivered to a store room or placed in rooms.
