Short answer: dust mother-of-pearl furniture weekly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; for marks, wipe with a cloth barely damp with water and a drop of mild soap, then dry at once. Never use vinegar, ammonia, bleach, glass cleaner or abrasive pads, keep pieces out of direct sun, and use coasters. In the Gulf, the main risks are sun, dry AC air and fine sand, so placement matters as much as cleaning.
Why mother-of-pearl needs gentle care
Mother-of-pearl is natural shell, mainly calcium carbonate. Acids (vinegar, lemon, many bathroom cleaners) dull it, and grit scratches its smooth surface. The wood it sits in also moves slightly with temperature and humidity. Good care protects both.
Weekly routine
- Dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, following the pattern rather than rubbing across it.
- For carved areas (mirror crowns, chair backs), use a soft brush such as a clean make-up brush.
- Do not use feather dusters with hard quills; they can catch on raised edges.
Deeper cleaning (every few months)
- Mix a few drops of pH-neutral soap in warm water.
- Dip a soft cloth, wring it until it is almost dry.
- Wipe a small area, then dry it immediately with a second cloth.
- Never pour water or spray directly onto the surface.
What never to use
- Vinegar, lemon or any acidic cleaner
- Ammonia-based glass cleaners (keep them off mirror frames when cleaning the glass: spray the cloth, not the mirror)
- Bleach, solvents or alcohol wipes
- Scouring pads, magic erasers or abrasive polish
- Silicone furniture sprays, which leave a film that dulls the shine
Caring for it in the UAE and GCC climate
Sun
Strong sun through glass can fade the wood finish and heat the surface. Keep pieces away from south- and west-facing windows, or use sheer curtains.
Air conditioning
Do not place furniture directly under or in front of AC vents. Constant cold, dry air can make wood shrink slightly. Keeping indoor temperature steady is better than big swings.
Humidity
Coastal homes in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Jeddah can be humid when the AC is off for long periods. If a villa is empty during summer, keep the AC on a moderate setting.
Sand and dust
Fine sand acts like sandpaper. Dust more often after sandstorms, and always dust before wiping with a damp cloth.
Tables: daily use
- Use coasters, placemats or a glass top on dining and coffee tables used daily.
- Lift objects instead of sliding them.
- Wipe spills at once, especially coffee, juice and perfume.
- Do not put hot dishes or incense burners directly on the surface.
Fixing small problems
- Dull area: usually a film from cleaners. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry and buff with a dry microfibre.
- Loose piece of shell: keep it safe and contact the maker. Do not use superglue; it can stain the wood.
- Scratch in the lacquer: ask a furniture restorer or contact us. ZW pieces have a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
Moving and storing
Lift furniture by the frame, never by the inlaid top or carved crown. Wrap in soft blankets, not plastic directly on the surface, and store in a cool, dry, air-conditioned space.
Frequently asked questions
Can mother-of-pearl get wet?
A damp cloth is fine if you dry it immediately. Standing water or soaking can lift pieces and mark the wood.
How do I make mother-of-pearl shine again?
Remove any cleaner residue with a barely damp cloth, dry it, then buff gently with a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid oils and silicone sprays.
Can I use furniture polish?
Avoid spray polishes. If the wood needs feeding, use a small amount of good-quality paste wax on wooden areas only, a few times a year.
Is mother-of-pearl furniture suitable for homes with children?
Yes, with coasters or a glass top on tables and regular dusting. Solid-wood pieces are sturdy.
