Crown Mirrors and Mother-of-Pearl Mirrors: Styles, Sizes and Where to Hang Them

Short answer: a crown mirror is a wall mirror topped with a tall carved crest (the "crown"), often with mother-of-pearl inlay in the frame. For a console or sideboard, choose a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width and hang it 15–25 cm above it. On its own, hang it so the centre of the glass is about 150–160 cm from the floor. Handmade crown mirrors at ZW cost AED 695–5,195.

Choosing the right size

  • Above a console or sideboard: two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width. Never wider than the furniture.
  • Above a sofa: about two-thirds of the sofa width, with the bottom of the frame 20–30 cm above the backrest.
  • On a feature wall alone: go big. A grand crown mirror fills a majlis or double-height entrance far better than a small one.
  • Pairs: two matching mirrors either side of a doorway or bed create symmetry, a classic Arabic design device.

Where to hang a crown mirror

  1. Entrance: the first thing guests see; also lets you check yourself before leaving.
  2. Majlis feature wall: opposite the window to bounce daylight around.
  3. Dining room: above a sideboard, reflecting the table and chandelier.
  4. Bedroom: above a dressing table; a mirror with shelves holds perfume and jewellery.
  5. Corridors: a tall, narrow crown mirror makes a long corridor feel wider.

Hanging it safely

  • Carved solid-wood mirrors are heavy. Use wall plugs and screws rated for the weight, not adhesive hooks.
  • On gypsum walls, fix into studs or use proper gypsum anchors.
  • Use two fixing points to keep the mirror level.
  • If in doubt, ask a handyman; most UAE maintenance companies offer this service.

Caring for the frame and glass

Spray glass cleaner onto a cloth, never directly onto the mirror, so it does not run onto the wood or inlay. Dust carved crowns with a soft brush. More tips in our care guide.
